A little bit about Quito...

Did you know that Quito was originally inhabited by the Caras and the Quitus? Later, in the beginning of the 16^th century, the territory was ruled by the Incas and it became the northern capital of their empire. Even though Atahualpa tried to make sure that the city did not fall into Spanish hands, the conquerors ended up building the colonial city on the Inca ruins around 1534.

Quito is the second highest capital in South America. Sprawling through a valley running north-south at the foot of Pichincha volcano, Quito’s setting is spectacular. The old colonial heart of the city is at the foot of Cerro El Panecillo, and the modern parts of the city are spilling eastwards. In 1978, UNESCO designated our city as a World Cultural Heritage Site because of its impressively preserved colonial architecture.
